In 1985 AITT (originally called the Association of Industry Truck Trainers) was formed by training providers and manufacturers, to discuss training standards of workplace transport in the UK. AITT’s mission was to set out, revise, and maintain a set of alternative standards to RTITB.

AITT Certification of Operator Registration Number Scheme

The AITT operator registrations scheme is called ACORNS. It is their database of all the AITT accredited training that has been delivered by their registered training providers.

The AITT database started in 2014, and now contains over 300,000 candidate records.

Each registration submitted to AITT undergoes a 17-point check to make sure it complies with AITT and ABA standards, providing peace of mind to the end user by having an HSE recognised qualification.

The Accrediting Bodies Association (Workplace Transport)


In 2012 and at the request of the HSE, the ABA (Accrediting Bodies Association) was formed, comprising of the 4 leading accrediting bodies: AITT, ITSSAR, RTITB, and NPORS. Their goal was to set a common level of standards across all awarding bodies.

“The ABA will agree and maintain a common set of standards for the basic skills and underpinning knowledge required to operate workplace transport equipment in line with all relevant & current legislation and approved codes of practice for the benefit of industry.”

In 2019 the AITT’s Managing Director, Adam Smith was nominated to become chairman of the ABA, to help move the association forward and complete the set of standards being established across all workplace transport
